In January 2001, Veronique Matthews had an inspiration for an organization that would serve persons in need of hope.
Veronique had been visiting the farm of a neighbor that raised miniature horses. He had a foal with the genetic defect of dwarfism (dwarfism occurs in about 25% of miniature horses) with clubfeet.
Most breeders will euthanize dwarf Minis because they are unsure whether the animal will have any quality to its life. Veronique was given this young colt, Toby, and Hearts & Hooves was born.
She worked with Toby by strengthening and straightening his legs and he is now just like any other healthy horse, although he is only 22 inches tall!
In January 2002, Hearts & Hooves also registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization.
More and more agencies began requesting Hearts & Hooves services, more and more people heard about Hearts & Hooves, and the rest, as they say, is history.
